Individual Number "My Number"
Individual Number "My Number" (個人番号「マイナンバー」, kojinbango「mai namba」)
Every person living in Japan has an Individual Number called "My Number". This number is different for each person. If you have moved to Japan and have submitted a move-in notification (転入届, tennyu todoke) to your municipal office, you will receive an Individual Number Notice (個人番号通知書, kojin bango tsuchisho) by mail. Your 12-digit Individual Number will be written there.
※Before May 25, 2020, there was a My Number Notification Card instead of an Individual Number Notice.
My Number is very important information. Even if you move out of Japan, once you return to Japan, you will use the same personal number and cannot change it at will. Only those who are legally allowed to have your personal number can know it. If you are asked for your personal number, please check clearly what it will be used for before giving it to the person asking you.
When you need your Individual Number
- When you open a bank account; make or receive an overseas money transfer, etc.
- When you submit documents for social insurance and taxes at the municipal office
- When you start working at a company, etc.
In such cases, when asked for My Number, please show your Individual Number Notice (個人番号通知書, kojin bango tsuchisho) or Individual Number Card (マイナンバーカード, mai namba kado).
Individual Number Card (マイナンバーカード, mai namba kado)
An individual Number Card, also called "My Number Card" is a card with your individual number and IC chip. This card is necessary for convenient life in Japan. When you apply for the first time, you do not have to pay.
You can use it in the following cases
- As an identity verification document
- When getting a copy of your Residence Certificate (住民票の写し, juminhyo no utsushi) at a convenience store
- Use it as a health insurance card at hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, etc.
- ※At some of those places, you can't use your Individual Number Card.
- When filing your income tax online (e-Tax)
!Note: Please bring your Individual Number Card to your municipal office in the following cases, and get the information written on it updated.
(1) After you changed your name or address
(2) When the validation period of your residence card changes
!Please come to City Hall with your My Number card and your new Residence Card before your previous Residence Card expires.
※If you applied for a new Residence Card but haven't received it yet, please come to City Hall with your My Number card and a Residence Card you have now before it expires, and get a consultation.
※If you don't come to City Hall in time, your My Number Card will no longer be available, and it will cost ¥1,000 to make a new My Number Card (re-issuance).
