Mayor's Commentary - City Employee Tested Positive for COVID-19 (as of Mar. 24)

On March 23, an employee (in his 20s) of Kasama Fire Station who had been in close contact with a previously infected individual was confirmed to have tested positive for coronavirus after taking a PCR test.

Currently, the infected person and all staff members who have been in close contact with him have been consulting with the Ibaraki Prefectural Central Public Health Center and self-isolating at home. Their PCR test results will be announced as soon as they are ready.

The employee was working as a paramedic. However, thorough infection prevention measures during emergency dispatches are standard procedures, so there were no risks to the patients being transported.

The infection confirmed among front-line emergency workers who are entrusted with the lives of citizens may cause some anxiety and concern. Temporarily, only one of the two ambulances deployed at the Kasama Fire Station will be in operation. In order to minimize the impact on the firefighting and ambulance services, a backup will be requested from the Tomobe and Iwama Fire Stations.

As soon as a possible coronavirus case was reported, all working spaces of the related department, including offices and vehicles, were thoroughly disinfected to prevent further spread of the virus.

We will continue to work with Ibaraki Prefectural Central Public Health Center and other related organizations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and implement protective measures with the utmost care.
