Initiatives Concerning Covid-19 & Japan Heritage (2020/6/17)
As of June 8, Ibaraki prefecture entered Stage 1 of the Prefectural Coronavirus Countermeasures Guidelines. As the spread of the coronavirus has started to die down, people's movement and restricted use of shops, commercial facilities, and public facilities have been slowly resumed.
In order to revive a fallen economy, economic countermeasures and other initiatives were approved at the 2020 Kasama City Assembly regular meeting. I would like to introduce an overview of these projects.
We ask all citizens for their cooperation to continue taking basic infection preventive measures based on the "New Lifestyle" guidelines.
Kasama City Mayor
Pottery Siblings "Kasama and Mashiko" were recognized as Japan Heritage sites!
On June 19, the Japan Heritage 2020 list was announced. After Kasama City and Mashiko Town (Tochigi Prefecture) jointly submitted to the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs, their collaborative story "Kasamashiko - A Tale of Pottery Weaved by Siblings," both were officially recognized as Japanese heritage sites!
The Japan Heritage Project, established by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, aims to revitalize regional economies through tangible and intangible cultural properties that create the historic charm and unique characteristics of the region. Out of the 69 submissions that were received this time around, only 21 were approved, bringing the total number of heritage sites across the country recognized so far to 104.
The origins of both Kasama and Mashiko pottery date back to the late Edo period (1603 - 1868), when potters who learned their craft in Kasama brought their techniques to Mashiko, and thus Mashiko pottery was born. That is how the two towns have developed their "sibling" relationship.
The future plans are to strengthen the bond between the two pottery production areas and to cooperate with the people of both areas to revitalize the regions with a focus on "pottery culture."
The details of the activities will be announced on Kasama City's homepage, social media, and other media platforms.
